HOP: What is your workout regimen? Do you use any of the Westside philosophies?
SG: Training prior to a meet: Twelve weeks of intense training, almost Rocky-like
I start with high reps and
pyramid down to low reps (BASIC). I videotape all of my squat workouts so I can see my mistakes and correct
them at the next workout. For bench, I use boards and lots of chains. For my deadlift, I do very heavy rack work.
I also use as little gear as possible during training.
Off-season training: High reps, a lot of different assistant work. I like to try new things, equipment, and gear.
This is the best time to try new exercises and gear. I also take this time to heal up and enjoy other things in life
more so than I would if I were training for a meet.
I use a lot of Westside exercises, but I don't totally train Westside. I’ve tried that style before, but I do better using
my own style. Louie Simmons has been a great teacher to me and also to the sport. Even though I don't train
Westside, I like his different philosophies.
