I kind of have a soft spot for 13. Eric Clapton: Tears in heaven and 62: Layla, since I learned to play guitar by taking up the Unplugged-notebook and playing. The first (nonclassical) thing I ever played was the solo of Old love (I always start easy  To my great pride, I
was able to play it note for note along with Clapton in two days). But I prefer both unplugged versions to the original ones, especially Tears.. since the other version both blows AND sucks.
Dream Theater – Images and Words (light years ahead of their debut. It set the benchmark for progressive metal, which still stands today)
An undeniable masterpiece and most definately a benchmark for both progressive metal and all rock utilizing virtuoso playing elements.
Tori Amos – Little Earthquakes (a stark, brilliant, confrontational debut from this unique songstress)
No argument here. Simply brilliant playing and songwriting.
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells II : controversial album, but i happen to like it a lot.
One of my favorite albums. :$ Actually quite great when you take out a transcription of the score and analyze it, especially while making comparisons to the original TB and noting how the same structure is used.
16. Under the bridge must also be noted because of the simple beauty in it. It utilizes a well used chordal progression (exactly the same as in for example, Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry) but still manages to sound original and personal. (ooh am I in a sobby mood or what.. :hangit
Bloodsugarsexmagik has a lot of good and fresh stuff on it and it's one of those albums I must have listened through at least a hundered times in high school.
One more album worth mentioning is Afterswish by Ozric Tentacles. It wasn't exactly their best work yet, but contained all the ozric elements of great playing and bold experiments with tonality and rhythm while maintaining the solid but wild compositions we know and love.
