NASA to test Indian Guru's survival without solid food
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At least astronauts can learn something from Hirachand Ratanshi Manekji to survive without solid food in the space if they get a training from him.
And perhaps, this could be one of the reasons why the Indian guru called as Hira Ratan Manek (HRM) phenomenon was invited by NASA authorities to stand for another test.
Because, the 66-year-old has been living on solar energy and without any solid food for the last eight years. HRM has left for the United States on June 27 from Kochi on an invitation from the scientific body.
The Kozhikode based Guru who left his business in 1992 to hold researches on solar energy will be undergoing the test soon at the NASA centre.
He will now come back only in December as he has to visit several other countries.
HRM stopped taking solid food in 1995, baffling the medical circles. He went for 211-day fast during 1995-96 and again on a 411-day stint in Ahmedabad in 2000-01.
The Guru who is visiting the United States on the invitation of Orlando-based Solar Living Centre and New Era Spiritual Centre Inc, went on fast for 130 days in America in the presence of medical experts recently.
Hailing originally from Kutch in Gujarat, HRM lives on water, coffee, tea and occasionally butter milk. "He does not need the feed. Then why should he take it," his wife who also observes fast on alternate days explained.
A mechanical engineer by profession, HRM was drawing energy from suryanamaskar (sun-gazing) and has immunised himself against any threat from diseases for the past eight years.
After going into his studies, the Imperial Medical College, London reached a conclusion that solar radiation was the original food of humanity.
Though he is against forming a disciple fraternity, over 25,000 men are believed to be following his principle and practice across the world. He goes around the globe, delivering lectures on his findings. Last year he delivered 136 lectures in the USA.
Man could receive the solar energy through his eyes, gradually increasing the duration day by day, believes HRM who needs just 45-minutes barefoot walk to recharge his cells. Only five per cent of brain was used by the man and the rest was asleep. Solar energy was means to awake these cells, he explains.
The Hiranchands have been settled in the City for over last one century. His son is into business while the only daughter was married to an Indore-based businessman.
