Kaikki ALA:t koostuvat puoliksi R-ALA:sta ja RS-ALA:sta. Näin ollen 200 mg:n kapselissa on joka tapauksessa 100 mg R-ALAa.
Näin periaatteessa, mutta maailmalla on myynnissä jo lukuisia R-ALA-valmisteita eikä näitä racemic-valmisteita (R+ -isomeerejä ja S- -isomeerejä), joita Suomessa kaupitellaan. ALAn toiminnalliset ominaisuudet esiintyvät nimenomaan tuossa R-versiossa.
Äkkiseltään voisi ajatella, että ottamalla esim. 600 mg perus-ALAa saisi saman vaikutuksen kuin ottamalla 300 mg R-ALAa, mutta on esitetty tutkimuksia, joiden mukaan S-ALA kumoaisi ainakin osittain R-ALAn vaikutuksen. R-ALA on se ALAn muoto, jota elimistö itse valmistaa, joten se osaa hyödyntää R-muodon paremmin. Kaikki elimistön avainentsyymit ovat rakenteeltaan sellaisia, että ne voivat tarrautua vain tuohon R-muotoon. Ehkä hifistelyä, mutta maailmalla monet vannovat nimenomaan tuon R-ALAn nimeen.
