Toisaalta Chuck on yksi parhaista välttämään/estämään alasvientejä. Sekä nousemaan maista ylös.

Totta, mutta edellisessä matsissa ei ollut mitään ongelmaa Randyllä. Noh turha tälläisista alkaa vatvomaan, Chuck voitti hienolla esityksellä.

Randyn haastattelu

Randy Couture
"...sometimes you measure success by how you deal with a loss."

Exclusive Interview

Randy "The Natural" Couture spoke for the first time since his knockout loss to Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell on MMAWeekly SoundOff Radio. In the exclusive interview Couture discussed the loss, addressed the thumb incident, and talked about where he goes from here.

"I'm doing fine man. I think you don't always measure success by winning all the time. I think sometimes you measure success by how you deal with a loss." Randy told MMAWeekly. The future UFC Hall of Famer added, "I've been in this situation before...And what are you going to do? Write your congressman? I don't think he's going to do shit for you. You might as well pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back after it."

Following the fight, Internet MMA message boards lit up with threads dedicated to Randy being thumbed in the eye, and whether or not that played a role in his loss to Liddell. When asked, Randy replied, "It was a thumb and I have to watch a little closer to see if it was from a punch or if it was actually just him pushing off on my head trying to get away from me. It was really no factor other than it fired me up a little bit, but I got a chance to recover. John saw that something happened and stopped the fight, let the doctor look at it. There was nothing, not a scratch, not a nothing. It was just a poke in the eye. It took a couple of minutes for that to recover. My vision was fine when we re-engaged. The problem was I needed to be a little more patient, a little more methodical, hunt him down. I was a little over aggressive and put myself out of position, and that created the opening for Chuck to land the right hand, and that was the end of the story."

Couture continued, "I know people are looking for an excuse, and it's easy for me to do that as well. There isn't one. It just happens. This is the fight game, and people can say I should retire and all kinds of things, whatever they want. It doesn't really matter. It's what I think that's most important. I think I was as fast or faster. I thought I was leaner and in better shape than I've been in. It doesn't mean it's always going to go your way."

Some have questioned Randy's game plan. Why didn't Randy take Chuck down? Why didn't he clinch more? Randy was asked those very same questions. He answered, "I had no intention on trying to go toe-to-toe with Chuck, but to take him down you have to engage him. You've got to get him to try and punch you. He had made an adjustment, straightened his jab out, and was basically trying to punch and run. You know? He was throwing a shot or two and quickly creating distance, and until I could get him to stop for a second and try and throw, the take down wasn't going to be there. My intention was to engage him enough to take him down, but the opportunity just hadn't presented itself yet. Again we're talking about two minutes of a fight. I think certainly would have. I needed to be a little more methodical, keep the pressure on him. I was doing that for the first minute and a half, and in that he was going to get frustrated of trying to get away from me all the time and that would have created the opportunity I looked for. It just didn't happen."

Couture was questioned specifically about the changes Liddell made in his game from the first time they fought. Randy commented, "He did a nice job of throwing a punch and then either pivoting, or creating an angle and creating some distance. He didn't stop and stay in front of me at all because he knew that I was going to be trying to take him down and put him on the ground. He definitely made some technical adjustments which I believed he would. I mean he's a good fighter. He didn't get where he's at by being a dummy...I made some more work for myself. I need to get back after it and fight whoever they want me to fight next to put myself in position to have another shot at Chuck and get the belt back."

With this fight behind him, Randy expects to return to the octagon late this summer. He stated, "I believe that, after the meeting I had yesterday with Dana, I'll be fighting on the August card in Vegas." Randy wouldn't give any names of possible opponents, but did say names are being tossed around.

Liddell called out Pride Champion Wanderlei Silva at the UFC 52 post fight press conference, but Couture losing his title could make him the more likely candidate to get an opportunity to fight Silva, if there is an opportunity at all. When asked about possibly fighting Wanderlei, Randy replied, "I think it probably opens the door for something like that to happen. They're going to have a lot more trouble sending the guy wearing their belt over there and putting that on the line, so I think if the opportunity presents itself here through the course of this grand prix that's something you could see."

That left the follow up question of who Randy would rather fight; Wanderlei Silva or a third match with Liddell. Randy answered, "I think I need to do both of those things, and which ever comes first, comes first.

In closing, Randy Couture remains a champion whether or not he has the UFC light heavyweight belt. "It sucks to lose, but it's part of the game. It's certainly not the end of the world. It doesn't define who I am and what I've accomplished, and we'll certainly be back again to fight." Said Couture.
