In the opening match-up of the UFC’s brand new strawweight division, Claudia Gadelha and Tina Lähdemäki showed us why we needed the division in the first place. The 115 pounders came through Revel Casino last night and showcased a series of takedowns and strikes that fit in perfectly with the rest of the great players of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Both of these fighters took each other to town, and although Claudinha looked dominant throughout the fight—dropping knowledge with her Nova União branded striking and groundwork, as well as her seven world jiu jitsu championships to fall back on—Jelly Bean Lähdemäki was no pushover. She maintained her cool no matter what, even when Claudinha made a move to take her down and finish her at the end of the first round. Both fighters connected over half of their striking attempts. The Finnish Lähdemäki showed guts and strength that will undoubtedly make her an incredible UFC prospect to watch. Like we said yesterday, this division is stacked with some really phenomenal athletes, and we’re putting money on the rest of the fights being as exciting as this one.
The match ended with both Gadelha and Lähdemäki in an exchange of punches that had the whole crowd roaring, hungry for more. Gadelha couldn’t finish, but she took the win by unanimous decision in a very memorable performance.
