"The row is not a lower back exercise. That means there should be no movement at the waist. You should not lean forward when returning the weight, nor should you lean backward as you pull the weight toward your body. Your lower back should remain stationary throughout the entire exercise. Bending at the waist decreases the effectiveness of the exercise by shifting the stress from the desired muscles (middle back) to the lower back. It also increases the risk of lower-back injury."
