"My opinion on the current state of bodybuilding
For what it's worth, I am bored and I want to hear myself talk (or type). I don't usually have too much time to get into my specific, long-winded opinions on things but I happen to have a little time and I just feel this overwhelming need to get my two cents in.
Agree or disagree, I don't fucking care. ......
I was reading on another site the other day about the death of Paul DeMayo and I came across a post from an old bolex member that surprised me with his response in that thread. He stated, among many other things, that he was not at all surprised at the death of Paul from an overdose and that the professional ranks are "as seedy and shady as the porn industry". I thought it odd that I could pretty much agree with this analysis and yet, it bothered me quite a bit to admit this.
I am no angel but I do what I can for the sport that I have put 21 years into and I try hard to portray myself in a positive light to people and especially people that are what we term "mainstream" or not of the bodybuilding, freak show, sub culture. I think it is incredibly important that these people see that not all bodybuilders are so self-absorbed that they can't take 2 minutes to answer a question in the gym, dress appropriately, treat people with respect no matter how big or small they are (we have ALL seen the guys that only tend to respect guys that are bigger or "better" than they are and everyone else can kiss their ass) and who can actually carry on a conversation about something going on in this world that doesn't have to do with a dumbell (pardon me if that sounded like a pun but that was not the intention) or something having to do with gear or rant and rave about ephedra being banned.
Now that we are clear that I don't think I am an angel I can admit that I want to do what I can so that I don't look like a complete moron to other people for being a bodybuilder. Sure, we can all say that we don't care what others think but that is a bold faced lie and we both know it. I DO care what others think even though I probably wish that I didn't. I care that when I go to school to pick up my daughter that other parents aren't thinking, "I bet he is only big because he uses steroids" or "He must be a dick because he is big" or something similar. I don't know how many times I have spoken with someone for the first time and they have ended up saying that they didn't expect me to be such a nice guy. LOL WTF?? So, I respond with something like "Why not you stupid fucking bitch?" Okay, maybe not but you get my point. It is tough to hear that because it reinforces what I already have known for years: I am being judged by how I look and it ain't usually positive, I don't believe.
Where does this all fit into my opinions on professional bodybuilding? Good Lord, where do I start? *sigh*
As I feel I have to work hard to portray this sport in a positive light, I feel that for every step I take forward in progress, some dumb fucker does something for the sport that sets my efforts (and that of others, as well) back 10 steps. Now, how fair is THAT? This brings me to the pros and the top national guys because these are the guys with the most exposure and the biggest opportunity to make an impact on people. Now, there are certainly good guys out there, don't get wrong. However, we all know that one rotten apple makes everyone go through the basket LOOKING and EXPECTING more rotten apples. I was disappointed with the death of Paul from an overdose for the same reasons that I have been disappointed in hearing tons of other cases of pros that do little more than train, eat, sleep, do drugs and fuck - more times than I would like to know, they are fucking other guys for money. What the FUCK does that say?? I could mention names but that isn't the route I really want to go. There are PLENTY of guys involved with gay porn and even waaaay more that have sugar daddies. At least this is USUALLY only known within the bodybuilding community but it still sucks (sorry, another bad pun). Am I wrong or do you guys really like to click on a thread and see a huge dildo in Chris Duffy's ass?? For the love of God........
The comparison to the porn industry struck me because of the amount of rec drugs involved in the porn industry and of course, in bodybuilding, as well. Thing is, you would THINK that in bodyBUILDING it wouldn't have a place as it does in the sinful industry of porn. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is just something that irks the shit out of me that someone can take such shitty care of themselves and be at the highest level of their sport (for lack of a better term). They then sometimes end up with health issues and what is blamed? LOL You betcha: steroids! Woo Hoo! Donald Hooten's dad is dancing the fucking cabbage patch every time a bodybuilder croaks because it will somehow be linked to steroids by the media - you can count on it. Who bares the brunt of this? You betcha, again: you and I. At least when I coke addict walks around the mall or goes and gets dinner people don't look at him and think, " I bet he does coke ". You and I walk around and I bet we would be surprised at what people really think. Sidenote: I wonder what they think FIRST - steroids or he sure is big. Personally, I bet within the last 6 months it is the former instead of the latter.
Aside from the drug issue and gay, sugar daddy issue you have the attitude issue and the way alot of guys want to carry themselves. The dress is one thing - I can deal with the wife beaters and that sort of thing. To each their own, I suppose. However, the attitude thing is bothersome because there is this " I am better than you " type of attitude. If you don't think so just check on most message boards and you will find the threads to prove it. Here are a few:
"the trainers at my gym are a bunch of fucktards"
This one only gets every single member of that board to post and laugh and chuckle about how stuuuupid the trainers are and how they don't know anywhere near as much as the guys posting on the board. Nevermind that you will always find alot of these same guys giving "fucktard" advice 5 minutes prior to posting in that particular thread.
"This asshole was reading a paper in the gym - he trains like a pussy..... "
This same asshole who reads the wallstreet journal runs his own company you fucking moron and makes 4 times what you make and can work when he feels like it. He buys and sells more shit in a day than you can buy in 10 years. The joke is actually on YOU because he is lauging at the way you walk around with your arms out to the side pretending to be huge when in reality you are small, pudgy (must be the offseason for you), wear dumpy clothes and your ass is fucking BROKE driving a 78 datsun pickup. Yeah, you are one hardcore mother fucker, though.
My personal favorite:
"This guy asked me a question in the gym and I told him to get the fuck away from me or I would beat him down. You know, I am a harcore animal when I train"
If I hear this shit one more time I am going to scream. Just one more example of another ass trumpet not doing anything at all for the sport. If you are approached with a question consider it a compliment. Small guys usually don't get approached. This is a PRIME opportunity for you to shed a positive light on bodybuilders by giving the guy a solid, polite answer that might take up 1 minute of your time. Are you such an asshole that you honestly can't spare 1 minute to help someone out? Yeah, you're right. You probably are.
Look, the point of this loooong post is to point out that I am disappointed with the current state of bodybuilding and I don't see enough guys doing their part to help our cause. Everyone is quick to bitch but not many want to actually do something about it. If you are going to get caught up in rec drugs and you kill yourself, don't expect sympathy from me because you are undoing the work that I am trying to do. I will sympathize with your family, no question. I will sympathize with your friends, as well. I don't feel I am "throwing stones" but rather being honest. I have stated before that I an no angel and I have my shit, too, that I would not expect others to sympathize over my poor judgements and mistakes, either. The difference is I am accountable to myself and my actions and don't make excuses for them - I own them.
The sport needs good PR. Anything positive that you can do, will help.
