Kävin Metal Gymillä jutskaamassa Starbuckin kanssa ja samalla väännettiin juttu Pakkislaisille. Haastattelu tehtiin vähän kansainvälisessä hengessä englanniksi. Here goes!
1. Kuka olet ja mitä teet?
- I'm a pro wrestler, rock musician and showman that prefers to go by the stage/artist name of Starbuck. I'm Canadian, born to Finnish immigrant parents in 1973 in Timmins, Ontario, Canada. I speak perfect English and pretty OK Finnish, but my writing skills in Finnish aren't so "kirjanmukaisia", if you know what I mean.
- The Starbuck name comes from the old 1970's TV series Battlestar Galactica, since I consider myself to be a retro kind of guy. I'm not one of these "nykymies"-types in Finland, you know, the kind that believes in this bullshit "tasa-arvo" propaganda and has lost his balls in the process. I believe in the old prototype of men who are warriors and hunters. You know, the kinds of guys that had pretty maiden's in distress hanging on to their thighs for dear life while their enemies blood dripped from their sword. Some people might think that's pretty chauvanistic but I don't see it that way. Since I seem to have such an old-school mentality I decided to take an old-school artist name too.
- Right now I wrestle in Europe for independent professional wrestling promotions and I front a heavy rock band in Finland called Stoner Kings (www.stonerkings.net). I'm also a licenced gym instructor and I do that on the side to make a few extra bucks. I help rock bands in Finland with the use of the English language, assisting vocalists and lyricists in proper use of English and pronunciation. I've worked with Timo Kotipelto of Stratovarius, Thunderstone, Lullacry and Godsplague to name just a few. I sometimes do media work if somebody is looking to use my talents. I was actually just working as a guest judge at a "missikilpailu" in Keski-Suomi a few weeks back. Last weekend on 13.08.2005 I wrestled in Villapiana, Italy against my most notorius foe, Norway's Erik Isaksen (who broke my left ankle in 2003), and I beat him for the IWS Intercontinental Title in a hard-fought 20-minute match.
2. Miksi juuri vapaapaini?
- Why pro wrestling? Because it is the king of sports! Pro wrestling combines the perfect balance of combat sport, showmanship, unique characters and heavy rock music dynamics to make for a very potent brew! I got hooked on pro wrestling at about 5 years of age when I first saw Hulk Hogan, if I remember correctly, on TV back in my native Timmins, Ontario, Canada. It was like the comic books, you know. Like the heroes in comic books. Any kid can identify with that. Big muscles, strong men, fight action, interesting characters with charisma, it was all easy to understand as a kid and easy to absorb.
- I've always loved pro wrestling, even growing up and into adulthood, which is why I got into the business initially as an announcer due to my strong voice and good delivery in September 1992 in Calgary, Canada. During my time there I became friends with a wrestler named Lance Storm (www.stormwrestling.com) and we became training partners at the gym. One day Lance asked me if I wanted to become a wrestler. He said he saw my passion for the sport and my drive and he said he would train me. Of course, I said YES! I owe a lot to Lance for what I have accomplished in this business. He is a great guy and a superb teacher. WWE's Chris Jericho even let me borrow his wrestling tights for my first match and Chris also gave me his old wrestling boots as a present. My first match was against Lance on January 7, 1994 in Calgary and he beat me in about 7 minutes but he made me look a lot better than a rookie should ever look. Since then I've wrestled in across Canada, in the USA and in Europe.
3. Minkälaiselta alan skene vaikuttaa pohjoismaissa yleensä?
- There's a promotion in Norway called the Norweigan Wrestling Federation (www.wrestling.no) for whom I will be wrestling again this coming weekend in Oslo on 21.08.2005 in a rematch against Erik Isaksen. There is a new group called GBG Wrestling (www.gbgwresting.com) in Gothenburg, Sweden for which I have been working as a trainer. In Finland there is Pro Wrestling Finlandia (www.pwfinlandia.com) for which I wrestle and work for as their trainer/coach. My next match for PWF will be in Järvenpää on September 4 as the promotion will be holding a title tournament and I will be part of that. I know there used to be a promotion in Denmark but I haven't heard anything from them in ages. There is also a new promotion in Moscow, Russia. They just sent me a promo DVD a few weeks ago. So pro wrestling is alive and doing well in the Nordic Countries!
4. Miten nuoret ja miksei vanhemmatkin kyvyt pääsevät mukaan vapaapainitoimintaan?
- Anyone who is interested in getting into pro wrestling needs to have the following qualities: a marketable look, physical conditioning, mental toughness, desire and drive, the ability to withstand rigorous training and endure various degrees of pain, charisma (and preferably speaking skills) and last of all they need to love pro wrestling. Nobody starts out making big money during their rookie stage. I have never become rich doing this, and I've been in this business since 1992. The guys in WWE (Raw and Smackdown) make some good money and it is possible to make good money in Japan and Mexico also. But money should not be the reason someone gets into this business. It should be because they love the sport.
- The oldest student I've had was 37 years old. I don't recommend getting trained for pro wrestling unless you are at least 18 years old because of the legal issues. If you get injured no one is going to take the risk of the law coming down on them because a minor was involved. This is a dangerous business and sport. Some people watch it on TV and think it's fake or they say "I can do that!" and all I have to say about those people is that they are idiots. We are trained professionals and very serious athletes. People that are on the outside looking in cannot understand the discipline, hard work, timing, and all the other aspects that come into play to become a successful pro wrestler. There is no business or sport in the entire world that is like pro wrestling. This is truly unique!
5. Sinulla on jotain valmennustoimintaa, kerrotko lisää tästä.
- As I mentioned I am the head trainer and coach for Pro Wrestling Finlandia, a promotion run by a woman named Maria Gren. This autumn I am looking at taking in a new group of students and I am looking for adult males and females between 18 - 40 who would be interested in becoming pro wrestlers. I will be training my students in Kellokoski, right beside Järvenpää. PWF has a training hall and the wrestling ring is set up there. Training would be on a bi-monthly basis, every two weeks on saturday and sunday for about 4-6 hours a day. The whole course will run between 6 - 9 months depending on the progress of the students themselves. The cost for training is 1.500 Euros for the entire schooling period. the stundent(s) must get their own insurance coverage in case of injury but that is only around 100 - 200 Euros a year, depending on the insurance company.
- Let's just say that I am very good at my job and I believe in generating a positive training atmosphere and through proactive coaching I tend to get the most/best out of my students. I was trained myself at the world-famous Hart Brothers school in Calgary, Canada by former WWE/WCW multiple-time champion Lance Storm and I was given an excellent education that I can pass on to the next generation of hopeful pros now in Finland and Scandinavia. I really hope that a domestic pro wrestling product can be successful here because SubTV has shown that Raw and Smackdown are tow of the most watched shows on Finnish TV period, and Finns need their own heroes.
