THE JEN AND DAVANA SHOW
Fitness and Figure Olympia reports
By Michael Berg, Flex Executive Editor
Jen Hendershott emerged victorious for her first-ever Fitness Olympia win, while Davana Medina continued her reign for a third year in the Figure Olympia.
Hendershott, who also won the 2005 Fitness International crown, completed a dream year by taking both major titles in Fitness, a feat that left the usually talkative tumbler struggling for words moments after coming off stage. "To win the Olympia, it's just amazing. I came here to do at least second or better, that was my personal goal. I've had such an awesome year; a number of things have gone right. I've had my struggles (in the past), and ... wow. I'm in shock." She added that she's seriously considering retirement, having now accomplished her goals in the sport and wanting to clear the path for her fellow competitors to step forward.
The contest was far from a blowout. In fact, the scoresheets had Hendershott in third place behind defending champion Adela Garcia and the eventual second-place finisher Kim Klein after the one-piece and two-piece physique rounds. By the end, however, "The Routine," as she's known, came through in a big way with her 45-second and two-minute performances, where she earned perfect scores. Rounding out the top five after Hendershott, Klein and Garcia were Tracey Greenwood, who was thrilled with her fourth-place finish - "three years in a row, top five - I'm psyched!" she said - and Julie Palmer, following up her win in the Charlotte Pro two weeks ago with a very respectable showing here.
Meanwhile, Medina barely edged out Jenny Lynn by three points to take the Figure crown. Third was perennial crowd favorite Monica Brant-Peckham. Truth be told, the contest could have gone either way between the top two, as Lynn was unmatched in stage presence and poise, while Medina perhaps had the slight edge in physique. Lynn was a touch softer in her lower body, which could have technically made the difference, but in essence it was too close to call.
