Finnish-American Bodybuilder

Hulkki - I feel indeed honored that you would recall that quote from so long ago.
Well, I have to admit I didn't remember the exact quote (I had to look it up) but I did recall your interview because that issue of Flex was the first one I had ever read and I read it a number of times. :D
To date I have been drug free, except for the use of prohormones in the past, now they are also a controlled substance here so I have to make a decision on how I want to approach my future bodybuilding outing.
Now, that is going to piss off a lot of drug users on this board as there seems to be a unified concensus among bodybuilders in Finland that no-one can ever build a competitive physique without drugs.

I do believe you however, as I think it actually is possible to make something out of oneself without steroids, but I have taken so much shit from others because of my beliefs I'm not sure how they'll put up with your saying so.

Anyway, I hope you can keep yourself injury-free and win another Master's national title. Make us Finns proud!

Hulkki - To each there own... Yes, there are a lot of jealous people out there who think that because they eat right, train right, and take boat loads of "supplements" but still can't get big that you must also be doing the same (or more) to achieve results.

They don't realize that only a small percentage of people on earth have the natural ability to really pack on some serious muscle.

By the way... I looked over your web site and must say that you have also made some serious gains since 1998. I wish I would have started working out when I was younger and had those high levels of test running through my blood.. who knows what I could have accomplished then.

Mostmuscular, you will surely get some some negative comments about your condition and NOT using any steroids. But you must be already familiar with this kind of "envious" comments.
As Hulkki said, most of us believe that your kind on condition is not possible without drugs.
Well done regardless of methods used ;-))

Thanks, that means a lot coming from someone of your stature in the sport. I hope to be able to compete in the Musclemania within the next 10 years, even though I understand their contests are only namely drug free. At least they conduct drug testing so it's not a free ride for the users.

Well, it looks like you have done pretty well regardless of your late start. ;)

I don't understand the "negative" comments about my conditioning??? why the hate from some? Although I have to say, well some are envious, they also must realize that I am NOT a big guy and my diets are long (22-26 weeks) and strict. You get out of it what you put into it, no more, no less.

I am not disrespectful to those who use, although in my past I may have argued the point. Through time, I have come to realize that everyone makes their own choices and lives with them, and drugs can be harmful IF used to the extreme. The fight to become number one however, sometimes takes people beyond the point of where they should go and their physique (and the sport) suffers for it. I admire the classic lines of bodybuilding yet still get a kick out of the mass monsters.

What he meant was negative comments from some about a) you being ripped as hell and b) you claiming to achieve this condition without gear. Most people here don't buy that equation after first being told by Weider et al that all these guys just eat Anabolic Mega-Pacs and then being told they are all on everything.

You did mention using prohormones in the past, which qualifies as gear in my book. However that's a topic discussed ad nauseam in here already, even though prohormones were never legal in Finland. I am curious though about whether you felt you got anything out of taking them?

Finally, welcome to the forum for my part as well, tons of respect  for the results you've achieved and best of success with getting back into shape. Any chance you might update this thread with pics once you get the train moving again?

I understand the complexity issue about prohormones. I guess I considered them "not" gear since when I took them they were legal OTC (over the counter). I consider gear anything illegal. Again, to each their own, and I'm sure the topic has been hashed here as it has on other forums.

While some of the prohormones did work somewhat, I've been told that they are nothing compared to the real thing. I made improvements with 1-AD, 19-nor (for cutting), and before they went off of the market, M-1T stacked with 4-AD gel. All of them added a few pounds of muscle and increased strength but nothing huge or dramatic as the real stuff would. I think taken in moderation they can be safe and feel pulling them off of the market here will force more people to consider the real thing now instead. I mean, if they had some success with prohormones and they are now on the "dark side" what's the difference what they take now?

I feel the real danger in the use of prohormones and gear was youngsters taking them. During your teen years and in your early 20's you have such natural ability to grow muscle mass and taking these compounds shuts down your natural ability. It's something that may not come back and you'll regret forever. I would have rather have seen an age limit on it's use and done a better job of educating our youth on it's effects on their natural system. Too many people want everthing "right now" and don't have the patience to wait. As I've written, my diets are long and strict, and I don't get lean in a short amount of time.

As far as updated pictures go, I may post some in the near future, although I'm not an exactly pretty 185... you have to remember at my age, EVERYTHING settles in the middle. No ripped six pack here... only a keg.

It would also be interesting to see pics of you from before you started to train. Always nice to see the transition...

Anyways, awesome condition there. Hope you stay healthy.

Päivää

It's been awhile but I thought I would update my fellow Finn's on my latest goals:

I am currently less than three weeks out from competing in the 2006 GNC NPC Teen, Collegiate, and Masters National Bodybuilding Championships which will be held on July 21-22 in Pittsburgh, PA in the United States.

A video has been produced documenting my training at this stage of my contest prep and can be viewed at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oVrbE51zc8

My wife Julie and daughter Bobbi shot the video footage and my oldest son Dennis Leppala did the editing. He did a super job on putting the thing together in a few hours!

With three weeks left I still am holding a lot of water but otherwise I am pleased with the gains I have made since I last competed at the Masters Nationals in 2003. At that time I took first place in the Over 40 Lightweight class.

This year I plan to compete in the Over 50 class as a Middleweight and in the Over 40 class as a Welterweight. The Overall winner of the Over 50 class and the top two finishers in the Over 40 class will qualify for Pro status in the IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilders). Only 14 Pro Cards are given out each year to men and this show will give me three opportunities to be recognized for Pro Status if I win my weight classes. Wish me luck!

I will also be competing on July 15 in Bloomington, MN as a middleweight and in the Over 50 class in the 2006 NPC Mr/Ms Minnesota Bodybuilding Championships. My goal in this show is to not only win my weight class but be a top contender for the Overall Mr. Minnesota title.

Wish this Finnish-American bodybuilder good luck. I hope you all enjoy the video... be sure to have the volume up so you can see what a great job my son did with the editing.

damn you look good. all that hard dedication towards training, dieting, and disciplined life does pay off, and it really shows on your physique. such an inspiration to everyone, showing that age is nothing but a number, and that you shouldn´t limit yourself because of it. anyone can come up with few excuses for not to get in condition, but just a few of us can really achieve the dreams that they are thriving for - regardless of the possible obstacles to overcome on the way. and you are definately amongst one of them.

good luck for achieving all your goals - and keep enjoying life to its fullest.

Just a comment not regarding bodybuilding. Coming from Minnesota, I hope you are a Vikings fan. I know I am. Go Purple!!!

My Finnish blood has blessed me with some good genetics
 I always thought that the Finnish genetics are everything else but good for gaining muscle. Seems that I'm wrong. But you gotta admit that you're a "genetic freak" at least to some extent. ;)

Nice video. And good luck for the competition. Although, with that physique, you are not going to need any... :D

Great video. Awesome physique, man. :)
I gotta say, that video gave me the inspiration-shot i needed today. :)

Hi!
you are in great condition! and great video by the way!

I just want to know what kind of exercise you make to shoulders???
how often you train and how many reps per sequense (for shoulders)?

Sorry about my language ability:itku:

awesome condition! :)
good luck with the competitions!

Wow, great work. That's some good motivational material for the oldtimers and why not for us youngsters too.:worship:

Stay healthy and win the prostatus!

It's the Finnish atmosphere around bodybuilding and all the other stuff that sucks, not the genetics.
