As a regular supplements user, we know you will be as concerned as we are about
the new EU legislation that threatens the future availability of vitamins,
minerals, herbal remedies and other safe and popular health products enjoyed
by millions of consumers.
We are supporting Consumers for Health Choice, an independent consumer group,
who are conducting a campaign backed by celebrities such as Sir Paul McCartney,
Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Elton John and other high profile celebrities. They are
determined to prevent European legislators banning a large number of dietary
supplements - and would like your help.
There are 3 pieces of new legislation, which must be defeated:
1. The Food Supplements Directive
Europe has passed a new Directive on Food Supplements containing vitamins
and minerals. This will lead to the banning of many safe and popular
nutrients, and the imposition of very low potency of others. There are over
300 nutrients missing from the list of substances that will be allowed by
EU - affecting an enormous number of products that have been available in
the UK for decades.
2. Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive
The legislation intends to force herbal remedies into the same regulatory
environment as pharmaceutical drugs. They would need to have a licence,
but in order to obtain such a licence, each product (not ingredient) must
have already been on the market for a minimum of 30 years, including 15 years
in Europe). The reality is that any herbal product that has been sold in the
UK for less than 30 years, even though it is safe and beneficial, will be
outlawed. A product that is a mixture of a traditional herb, plus a vitamin
and/or mineral is also banned, simply because the Directive does not provide
a home for them.
3. The pharmaceutical drugs category
The third threat is that Europe is considering a plan to amend the Medicines
Directive in such a way as to push many food supplements, even vitamins and
minerals, into the pharmaceutical drugs category, which means they will not
be available on general sale in the UK.
